Web design is a very broad term. In this segment we are discussing the basics of how good web design functions within a web site. This is not really a discussion on design, but rather the aspects of overall web design that are part of your business image. You can take a look at some of our websites in our Brisbane web designer site.
Business Web Site Branding
Firstly the most obvious aspect of designing web sites for business has to be building a site that reflects the branding assets of the company. By that I mean that often people have these elaborate web sites online, and yet when you see the company's signage or logos there is absolutely no resemblance to the bricks and mortar that is the real world business.
This is not a small business criticism, if you look around you will see many examples of this in the large corporate sector. Very strange indeed!
It makes perfect sense to have the online design reflect the real world business. The internet is a huge branding opportunity that should be used to the fullest!
Web Technologies
For myself I always feel that a web site should have all the best practice features that are available at the time of site construction. Today we build all our sites with a mix of CSS which describes how the on page information is rendered by the web browser; and XHTML which constitutes the content itself.
So when a web browser hits a CSS and XHTML web site the browser loads the tiny CSS file that describes how the site "looks" - fonts and colours, line space etc... while the XHTML actually is the content itself. This equates to a very fast web site which makes for a great visiting experience; the search engines love it as they have the conent separated out in very easily digested form and everyone wins! Fast is small and small is good in web terms!
So why build an old "tables" based web site that can be 70% larger full of bloated code that describes every pixel on the page when the new technology is so much faster and the result is so superior?
